The IAC 1090 iABS is a portable, web-enabled,
real-time, early-warning biomonitoring system designed to detect
toxic water conditions by measuring changes in fish behavior. For
determining potential water quality threats as early as possible
moment, nature has provided us with an extremely powerful, reliable,
and accurate early warning capability in the Bluegill (Lepomis
macrochirus). No known man made sensor can match the Bluegill in
determining emerging water toxicity threats.
Fish, unlike man-made sensors, respond to a wide range of chemicals
and chemical compounds. This natural reaction provides rapid,
reliable detection of developing water conditions for several groups
of toxic materials such as metals, cyanide, organic solvents, and
pesticides.
As the fish swim, breathe, and cough (yes, fish cough!) their
movements are detected by noncontact sensors mounted in the IAC
1090 aquarium. These movements or ventilatory parameters (ventilation
rate, average depth, cough rate, and percentage of motion) along with
water quality parameters are processed and automatically analyzed to
provide an immediate assessment of water toxicity.
If the fish detect toxic conditions, an alarm is triggered and the
IAC 1090 can immediately take a series of water samples.* The system
will automatically notify appropriate staff by phone or email, allowing
authorities to conduct a detailed investigation, if desired. In some cases,
the system can even be configured to shut off water valves. The IAC 1090
iABS can operate in a networked or standalone configuration and is designed
for remote monitoring (e.g., modem, internet).
* System must be equipped with optional automated water sequential sampler
